The Main Goal Was Helping Each Other Get Home

This book tells the stories of 6 Vietnam veterans, (5 men, one woman) 50 years after the end of that war. It honors their experiences and values their reflections on how their time in that war has shaped their lives.  Photos and texts from the 6 veterans are combined with other images from that conflict.  Each veteran received a copy of the book, as did my 7th grade social studies teacher, to whom the book is dedicated.

Sample text

“An enemy soldier pointed his rifle at me and fired. I saw the muzzle flash. I wondered: How could he miss?  How could they all miss so many times during my one-year combat tour?” Jack Swickard

“The main goal was helping each other get home.  Will always be sad about friends who didn’t make it back.” Lanny Tonning

“My service in Vietnam taught me that it is important to make my people visible and not allow us to be marginalized because it makes it easier to dispose of your enemy.” Donna Loring
